My husband reserved a Sunday afternoon couples massage at Above and Beyond Day Spa in Fredericksburg, Texas. We were one of the first couples at their newest modern day spa location after a recent move where they had been opened for 12 years in an 1869 historic two-story limestone building.
We were welcomed by super-friendly massage therapists in the waiting room while we filled out our intake forms about the type of services we would like to receive. I specifically marked medium to firm for a full body massage and reflexology. Most of the time, I ask for the pressure to be deep, but I wanted a bit gentler experience for my neck and upper back since I already had pain.
The walls were painted a fresh light green color that added to the calmness and peace among interesting eastern art pieces. There was a bit of an American Indian collection incorporated with local art.
Couples Massage
The massage therapists led us down the hall to our romantic dim lit couples room where we undressed and got under the comfy warm bedding. As we faced down through the face cradle on the massage table I noticed there was no overpowering scent or smells of perfumes. So I did ask if she uses essential oils. Sarah Schoonover who was treating me offered a eucalyptus essential oil with my massage. Relaxing woodwind music played while we had our massages. Trae Booth treated Jason who ended up falling asleep and snoring at one point within minutes. So I would say he trusted her enough to feel comfortable to doze off.
Sarah worked on my back by using her forearms as her primary massage method. Her reflexology style included repeated application on my feet that I believe cleared some areas in my body to release pressure and opened up some blockages. It certainly improved my well-being and I felt so relaxed.
One of the best parts of my massage was the neck technique that I absolutely enjoyed by Sarah. She scooped her arms underneath my back and gliding her hands up the back of my neck. I don’t know what that technique is called, but it sure released tension in my upper back muscles and I felt free. The pain that I have been enduring for the last two weeks that I came riding in town with was gone. It was like this massage session stretched my aches out and the pressure of the swooping moves was exactly what I needed.

After our massage, we had the pleasure of meeting the spa owner, Dawn Kyle Donalson. She shared her journey in wellness and massage, which dates back to the 1980s, and her commitment to holistic health and therapies. Her dedication to creating a welcoming and serene environment was evident in every aspect of our experience.

Ms. Donalson also introduced us to the UVILIZER Tower, a cutting-edge UV light sanitizer used to disinfect their rooms. This device uses a 38W UV-C ozone disinfection bulb to sterilize areas up to 200 square feet. It’s eco-friendly and purifies the air without the lingering odors of chemical cleaners, ensuring a safe and clean environment for every guest.
Smart Hydration and Wellness
Before we left, we were offered water from the Nikken Aqua Pour, a hydration system that sparked an interesting conversation about liquid dietary supplements and the importance of proper hydration for overall health. The water was refreshingly pure, free from the heavy mineral taste that often accompanies filtered water. As someone who is particular about water quality, I was impressed and took a second cup with me.
