There is something nostalgic about blackberry picking that feels tied to the slower pace of summer.

For our family, visiting Oneal Berry Farm in Royse City has become one of those seasonal traditions we genuinely look forward to. Since 2022, we have made the short drive to this laid-back family farm, leaving each visit with sun-kissed cheeks, blackberry-stained fingers, and baskets filled with fruit destined for homemade desserts.

Simple experiences like these often become the memories we treasure most.

Blackberry Picking in Royse City

Located along a quiet country road in Royse City, O’Neal Berry Farm offers a refreshingly relaxed experience.

There is no complicated process or crowded attraction atmosphere. You simply drive up, park, grab a basket—or bring your own—and make your way toward the rows of budding vines.

The beauty of blackberry picking is that it invites you to slow down.

Rows of berries stretch across the property, and before long, you find yourself carefully searching for the darkest, ripest fruit hidden beneath the leaves. The reward is worth the effort—sweet, juicy blackberries ready for snacking or baking.

For families, the experience becomes just as much about the surroundings as the berries themselves.

A Farm Experience Kids Enjoy

One of our children’s favorite parts of visiting O’Neal Berry Farm has little to do with the berries.

The chickens.

They roam the property freely, clucking about and working hard helping manage pests among the rows. Watching them dart around the farm adds a charming and authentic touch to the visit and usually earns plenty of attention from younger guests.

It is part of what makes the farm feel welcoming and genuine rather than overly commercialized.

The atmosphere is casual, family-friendly, and wonderfully uncomplicated.

More Than Just Fresh Blackberries

Of course, we rarely leave with only berries.

Over the years, we have also brought home several of the farm’s local offerings including honey and jam.

At home, our blackberries often become some of our family’s favorite desserts—Blackberry Lemon Ice Cream Pie, warm cobbler fresh from the oven, and cheesecake topped with homemade blackberry compote.

If you enjoy stocking your kitchen with seasonal ingredients and local products, O’Neal Berry Farm offers several options to take home.

  • Frozen blackberries — $8.50 per pound
  • Blackberry jalapeño jam — $7.50 half pint | $14 pint
