In this video, I unveil this exquisite ornament. See the craftsmanship and the rich history it represents. The Rockwall community requested this year’s ornament. It features the iconic Rockwall County Courthouse, a prime example of art deco architecture since 1941.
A Piece of History
Rockwall County, chartered in 1873, has seen several courthouses over the years. The third courthouse was condemned in the late 1930s, which prompted Judge Mike Reinhardt to apply for funds from the Work Projects Administration (WPA). Thanks to the efforts of Congressman Sam Rayburn and Senators Tom Connally and Morris Sheppard, Rockwall County received a $52,000 grant. The county funded the remaining $40,000.
Construction of the new Art Deco building began in 1940. On June 17, 1942, Texas Governor Coke R. Stephenson dedicated the four-story courthouse, designed by Voelcker and Dixon. This building quickly became the heart of the community. It hosted homecomings, pep rallies, visits from Santa Claus, and gatherings for election results. The top floor even housed the county jail until 1988.
After failing to meet ADA guidelines, the courthouse was vacated in 1994. However, renovations in 2002 breathed new life into the building. The courthouse now houses the Commissioners Court, Administrative County Judge, and Tax Assessor’s Office.
