Several years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman whose world-renowned taste for apparel was unmatched. He was, without a doubt, the original influencer of men’s fashion: Derrill Radcliff Osborn. Born on July 22, 1942, and passing on July 1, 2019, at his Dallas home, Osborn left a legacy that continues to inspire.

Derrill Osborn was more than just a fashion executive; he was a true style icon. His influence was deeply felt during his tenure at Neiman Marcus, where he championed the three-button suit and emphasized the importance of men’s tailoring as a service. After serving in the U.S. Army, Osborn began his retail career in 1964 at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. There, he served a clientele of aristocrats and celebrities, eventually working his way up to the role of buyer.
It was in Beverly Hills, while working at a small shop, that Osborn’s path crossed with Stanley Marcus, co-founder of Neiman Marcus. Impressed by Osborn’s impeccable style, Marcus invited him to join the prestigious company—a decision that would forever change men’s fashion.

Osborn’s influence extended beyond fashion to his personal life, including his townhome in Oak Lawn, which I was fortunate to visit. His home was a treasure trove of elegant furnishings, marvelous antiques, custom-made armchairs, and a vibrant collection of art. Every inch of wall space was covered in paintings, ornate frames, and first-edition books. The European-inspired decor, with its red and green walls, combined with the sounds of classical music, created an ambiance that was nothing short of magical.
Osborn was a people person, genuine and full of captivating stories. He often hosted annual dinners with the Old Friend’s Society and had a particular fondness for fobs, which he wore with his vest, often accompanied by a flower. He also co-illustrated a children’s book, Zosie the Zebra, with all profits donated to Highland Park Presbyterian Church to support the community of Njuthine, Kenya. His artistic talents extended to calligraphy, which he often incorporated into his greeting cards—always with a personal touch.
A Dallas Celebrity and Art Collector
Everywhere Osborn went, he turned heads. His unique style—from his signature floppy hat to his carefully curated color palette—demanded attention. He was a dapper gentleman in every sense, and his presence was impossible to ignore.
An avid art collector, Osborn’s home was filled with carefully preserved paintings. His eclectic taste extended to a collection of bovine art, which garnered significant attention during an incredible sale at the Dallas Auction Gallery, where over $500,000 worth of vintage cows and farm animal art was sold. He drove a 2010 Tuxedo Metal Black Ford Harley-Davidson edition F-150, complete with low-profile Italian tires, interior mood lighting in his favorite colors of red and green, and Persian prayer rugs as floorboards. Osborn’s style was unique, even in his choice of vehicle, which he preferred over a sedan for its practicality in transporting his collections.
A Farewell to Remember
Osborn’s attention to detail extended to his own farewell. True to his nature, he ensured that the Dallas Morning News received his funeral announcement, complete with a dress code. His memorial at Highland Park Presbyterian on July 24, 2019, was not just a time to mourn, but a celebration of a life lived with purpose and style.
