Welcome to the family entertainment room! This room has so many uses from being our main room to watch blockbusters, host family celebrations, our kids toy depot, a sleep over space and where I ultimately fold laundry.
As you spend more time living in a space, you get to know which elements work best for your preferences and lifestyle (and which ones don’t). When you follow those instincts, that’s when your home begins to feel even more livable and enjoyable.
In today’s post, I’m breaking down how the design of this room has changed over time and what we might update in the future.
Updates We Made To This Room
Interior Paint Color
Our wall paint finally changed from the original builder’s cream to Behr’s Norwegian Blue. I believe blue is the color of trust, responsibility and relaxation. In our home we need Jesus, but we also need to create a place of peace.
Every color has positive and negative traits. On one side, the blue color means loyalty, honesty, trust, responsibility, calm, commitment, wisdom and serenity. Blue helps us stay physically calmer, regulating heartbeat and breathing. It slows down the metabolism, too! After all, blue is a relaxing color right?
Here are the physical effects of blue:
• Lower our heart rates: Which is why we receive the overall feeling of relaxation and calmness. After all, blue is also a healing color.
• Enhance cognitive skills: Researchers have found that blue, together with red, enhances cognitive abilities.[1]
• Calm and relax: Glasgow and Tokyo cities experienced a decrease in criminality rate as well as in the number of people who took their own lives after blue street lights were set up.[2]
Wall Décor
I certainly would like to add more art décor to the wall. We went to At Home to buy some sort of ocean related art. Most of the art in my home will be my own. Instead of waiting around from when I get inspired we bought this 60″ x 30″ canvas print “Afternoon Gulls” by Artist Craig Trewin Penny. It spoke to me as a reminder of something biblical that maybe I will expound on in the future. For now, it is a beautiful addition that will pull this room together.
Future Design Elements
I love leather furniture for my family room only. More storage and larger display tables will be my next additions to add more depth to the room. There are vaulted ceilings so the focal of the room may have textured pattern curtains. I would like to add a fern or incorporate greenery.
Entryway
We continued the Norwegian Blue color down the main wall to our front entry which I really love. The colors of the flowers actually pop more on the canvas. I have had this kissing couple under an umbrella in Paris for a number of years. I’m sure prints are still available to purchase. On top of the record player unit that I also purchased at At Home is a blue mosaic decorative boat bowl. I have not decided what to put in it. Or maybe it will stay open for people to view the pattern.
More To Purchase
Below is the Mosaic Oval Boat Tray if you are interested in purchasing this or the collection. Certainly more greenery, textured bright pillows, family photos and other sitting chairs is what I’m thinking. I’m not sure about sculptures yet, but I would be open to incorporating them.
