Do you desire to be a couple that gets up in the morning that gives God your first part of your day by reading from His Word and praying together? Let me encourage that it can happen. You both may not be at the same place in your heart, mind and spirit. Each spouse may be struggling with various battles that may be effecting this commitment. Be willing to be patient and to be open to waiting for your spouse to finally come join you.
Timing Is Important.
I remember there was a long period where we struggled with one spouse was getting up in the morning and ready to start praying. While the other just snoozed until it was time to go to work.
As a couple, we made a commitment to get up at 5am to read together and pray. During church service I felt that Jason was going to talk to me about it. I remember feeling at peace about it and to be patient for that discussion to be led by him. I believe it was the Spirit of the Lord that went before so-to-speak to work on the details. So when he came to me with this idea I was ready to commit to give it another go. This time to be flexible. We agreed that it would be for 15 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour. Either way, we have coffee and we discuss what we are reading. Oh and yes, he brews our coffee. Inside funny for those who like to crack a joke.
I do set my alarm on my phone to go off and for the most part we both have been getting to our meeting spot in the kitchen.
Which Book Did We Start With?
We started in the book of James…it’s right after Hebrews in the New Testament. This book is actually quite fitting for us considering that we have endured some trials and we are being inspired about genuine faith.
For the most part, we both are not going in with an agenda or additional devotions. We are simply reading a chapter and praying together.
Belief in God is not the same as faith in God. Demons believe that God exists. They also believe that Christ rose from the grave. But they do not willingly submit to His will or eagerly put their destiny in His hands.
James proves that even when you feel the most comfortable with the Lord or maybe you believe you have Him figured out…He can still surprise you and change your world.
