Don’t Throw it Out! TikTok/Instagramer Armen Adamjen shares his plant tips and tricks to help inspire and encourage people of all ages to rethink what sustainability means. As a new content creator, he produced short videos on plant problems people are dealing with in order to create basic information that people around the world could find useful and learn from. Not long after trying to find his own videos on TikTok and requests from his followers he finally committed to publish a book titled, “Don’t Throw It Out!”

I first ran across his Instagram @creative_explained in a Facebook Reel where he shared how to grow your own lemons. Which happened to be something that I am interested in growing lemon trees in pots to border my patio area. I enjoyed two videos he published where he shared quick tips on how to keep fruits & veggies fresh longer. Below are some of the little hacks that you can try.

Reduce Food Waste By Learning How To Store Your Food

1. Onions, Garlic and Shallots. Keep them outside of the refrigerator in a dry cool area.

2. Lettuce. Wrap them in foil. Stick them in the refrigerator and they will be fresh for 30 days.

3. Potatoes. Never put potatoes in the refrigerator. It will turn the starch into sugars. Place them somewhere cool and dry. And in a very dark spot.

4. Scallions and Asparagus. Fill up a jar with a little bit of water and add them in. Then loosely place a plastic bag over them and they will last 10 to 14 days.

5. Cucumbers. Don’t refrigerate cucumbers. They will get mushy in 3 days. Put them in plastic bags for ventilation and poke some holes in the bag. Then place them in a cool spot in the kitchen.

6. Pears, Apples and Kiwis. Keep them separate and away from the other fruits, because they release a gas called ethylene. This gas will ripen everything else around them.

7. Ginger & Lemon. They do best in the refrigerator.

8. Tomatoes. Keep them on the kitchen counter.

9. Herbs. You want to wet a paper towel and roll the herbs in it. Place it in a zip lock bag and then put it in the refrigerator.

10. Bananas. Wrap the tops with plastic wrap and give them their own little spot.

11. Bell Peppers, Chili Peppers, Jalapeños Peppers. Put them in a plastic bag, poke some holes and put them in the refrigerator and they will be fresh 10 to 14 days.

12. Spinach. Put in an air tight container, line it with two to three layers of paper towels. Put spinach on top, close container and stick in the refrigerator. Fresh for 10 days.

13. Celery. Wrap them in tin foil and put it in the refrigerator. They will be fresh for 14 days.

Adamjen’s genuine love for gardening and plant hobby is inspiring kids to do plant projects and I have to admit there are quite a number of ideas that I want to try myself! So if you are a parent or maybe you are interested in growing your own food I would recommend watching his videos by subscribing to his Instagram Channel or buying his books.
