In the middle of sprucing up our outdoor living space I found two pieces of decor that I just bought at Hobby Lobby for half off.
Rough, rustic wood is not really my style for my interior. But it would go great with what I’m hoping to achieve in my patio area. My patio area walls are brick with the typical mortar. So before I went to the lengths of doing any possible damages to my beautiful brick walls. I decided to do a little research in finding what could work to hang the decor without drilling.
How To Hang Decor Without Drilling Into the Brick or Mortar?
As it turns out there are a few types referred as “Brick Clips” or “Brick Hangers”. Depending on the weight may determine which version that would work. However, I was not successful in finding a “Brick Clip” at Home Depot or Lowe’s. I did purchase “Brick Hangers”. According to the directions, you are to adjust the prongs to be larger than the mortar joint. Then push the prongs into mortar joint. Press bottom of hanger down allowing teeth to grip lower back. No tools required.
The “Brick Hanger” didn’t work once we hooked the decor to it. In our case, because there was a lot of mortar and there was not enough space for the prongs to apply the pressure needed to grasp the brick. Brick Clips can be found on a variety of online sites.
What To Use To Drill To Hang Decor On Brick Walls?
Weigh your decor so that you can use the right anchor that will be drilled into the mortar.
In my case my decor is less than 10lbs. I purchased for $2.28 a pack of 10 Blue Hawk Plastic Anchors. The pack included #8-10 x 1-1/4 in Anchors and #10 x 1-1/2 in Screws for Drywall/Masonry (25lb).
Below are 5 quick steps to achieve this that will take approximately a few minutes to do.
STEP 1: Gather Items Needed
With a measuring tape we measured the wall to find the center. Then we used a marker where we marked the mortar with an “x”.
STEP 2: Drill
We used our Ryobi Drill and inserted the 1/4 drill bit for masonry from the Ryobi Drilling and Driving Kit to drill a hole into the mortar.
STEP 3: Anchor
Next, we hammered the Blue Hawk Plastic Anchor into the hole that was drilled. You can use the drill’s bottom to hammer the anchor into the hole. It’s recommended by professionals to drill into the mortar verses the actual brick. Mainly to avoid risk of fractures. Anchors prevents decay and the screw from falling out.
STEP 4: Screw
With the drill we attached the Blue Hawk Screw and screwed the Blue Hawk Screw into the Blue Hawk Plastic Anchor.
STEP 5: Hang
Then we proudly hung the decor onto the screw in the mortar.
If you are thinking about a good gift to get your man or adding a stocking stuffer then consider a drill bit kit that covers a variety of materials such as: wood, drywall, masonry and metal.
My husband’s gift definitely came in handy in our Do-It-Yourself (DIY) project.
I enjoy romantic walks through the hardware store.
