Tackling Bedwetting: How to Remove Urine Stains from Mattresses
Do you have children who occasionally wet the bed? If so, you’re in the right place. As a mom of twins who are prone to random nighttime accidents, I understand the struggle. Despite being potty-trained, my twins still have accidents—sometimes one on Tuesday, and the other on Wednesday. It’s not only frustrating but also leaves a lingering odor that seems impossible to eliminate.
After countless back-and-forths with Sleepy’s Protect-A-Bed Warranty Department about their supposedly “defective” mattress protector, I realized that they weren’t going to deliver two new mattresses to my doorstep. So, I needed to find a way to remove these stains myself.
That’s when I stumbled upon a YouTube video titled How To Get Pee Out of A Mattress by Clean Freak & Germaphobe. They demonstrated impressive results using a mattress from 1954, so I figured it was worth a shot on my kids’ mattresses.
The Solution: DIY Mattress Cleaning Spray
Full disclosure: during my experiment, I had to switch spray bottles because the nozzle on my first one stopped working. But here’s the simple recipe I used:
• 8 oz of Hydrogen Peroxide
• 3 tablespoons of Baking Soda
• 1 squirt of Dish Soap*
• A few drops of Essential Oil (optional, for scent—lavender, peppermint, and berries work well)
*Note: You can skip the dish soap if needed.
Instructions:
- Mix the ingredients in a cup.
- Pour the mixture into a spray bottle.
- Generously spray the affected area.
- Let it sit for 24 hours before using the mattress again.

Does It Still Smell?
Thankfully, the strong odor is gone! However, some stains remain, so I’ll need to give it another try. I’m also in search of a more reliable mattress protector. Below is the video that inspired my cleaning experiment. It’s possible they just used a better spray bottle, leading to their success. If you try this method, I’d love to hear how it worked for you!
