I bought some supplies from Hobby Lobby a basic watercolor set for my girls and the next step up set watercolor box for my son. It made him feel extra special.
By taping down some trash bags on our dining table helped with the possible mess. Which there really was not much mess.
Pretty much I just let them explore the colors on their own. One mistake I made was not getting multiple watering bowls. Apparently, we were in a shortage due to many of our plastic bowls were in the outdoor playhouse that I discovered a week later.
My daughters were mainly focused on coloring and dipping the brush. My son wanted to create portraits of Nemo or Ariel. He really wants to do what I do with focusing on one specific muse. His gusto is admirable, but he gives up too quickly. It may be because he envisions what he wants to do, but doesn’t understand it takes practice to do that.
Later I eventually ordered smocks. If you were thinking that watercolor is only for a specific age group I hope this encourages you to give a try with your children. I wish I had these sorts of art supplies available to me at this age.
