When I think about the Buchanan House, I think about a friend who is loved by many, a family with Texas-sized adventures, and all the wonderful memories that are made along the way.
I imagine the conversations around the dinner table, breaking bread together, decorating for the holidays, and celebrating life’s special moments. It’s the kind of home where stories are made and friendships are treasured.
And then there’s the Buchanan herself.
She’s a woman with grit, a love for design and architecture, and an appreciation for a good book. She’s someone who brings so much personality to the world around her.
May each of us have a Buchanan in our lives.
When I began this house portrait watercolor, I wanted to capture the architectural character of the home. I started with a pencil drawing and gradually built up layers of watercolor, paying attention to the roofline, windows, columns, and even the subtle details of the garage door.
I took a few artistic liberties with the landscaping. One tree didn’t quite balance the composition, so I decided to leave it out. And I have to say, I’m especially pleased with how the bushes turned out!
My goal was to create a realistic watercolor rather than an impressionistic interpretation. I wanted the home to be recognizable while still allowing the softness and character of watercolor to come through.
This is a 12×18 watercolor created using Master’s Touch watercolor paint on acid-free premium paper.
For me, this painting is more than an architectural study. It’s a little tribute to a beautiful home, a wonderful friendship, and the memories that make a house so much more than its walls.
