From converting Corban’s crib to a full-size toddler bed it has been a clutter storm that somehow managed to spread throughout our home. It has been one of those things that has overwhelmed me. After evaluating what my children actually played with I have come to a milestone that has been long overdue.
I was telling my girlfriends and my husband that one day that ended up lasting a week of binge cleaning. It started when I dived in head first into a Keto journey. It was like I had a Bradley Cooper experience from “Limitless”. Excluding the drugs and all the other crazy plot. My mind became so clear and honing in on how to get certain things accomplished. The willingness and energy was so there. Even my blogging and much of everything else that I intended to nurture was pushed to the side. I was so determined to get my home back to a state that I can say that I am proud of this space.

I plan to renovate my son’s closet space too. Until then, I am working on managing our life by utilizing the following 5 tips to declutter my son’s bedroom.
This bedroom closet is a typical closet that most average homes may have. No light and a shelf with an unadjustable hanging rod. We are fortunate that we have a high ceiling so we can take advantage of going vertically.
Clothes
Your kids are going to grow, but we often forget to clean out the closet. We would push to the right or left the clothes on the hanging rod with no real thoughtful organization. Or we have some clothes in drawers. Spend time going through all of the clothes. If you have to put it on the floor or bed do it. Separate all of the clothes to what fits and what does not fit. For instance, if your son fits 5T tops then all of the other lower sizes should be handed down to your other children, or put in a pile to either donate or store it for a garage sale.
Categorize
Put all of of your tops, overalls, jumpsuits, jackets and costumes on it’s own hanger. Depending on the season put all of the clothes to be right within reach of the doorway. On the left, hang the jackets and costumes. On the right of the reach in will be your next season. All short sleeves or all spring clothes to be hanging in one section. Then all of your long sleeve or winter clothes hanging in another section. Put that section right in the reach in area in front of the door entrance. Other ways to categorize hanging the tops can be by colors or style types.
Keepsakes
Put your keepsake clothes hung on the very ends or store them in a container. In my son’s drawers, I put all of the pajamas tops and bottoms in one drawer. In one drawer I put all of his underwear or undergarments. Socks in another drawer. Long pants folded and separated by style in one drawer. All shorts in it’s own drawer.
Wall Hangers
Hang hats or outdoor jackets on a wall hanger. We put his wall hanger behind his headboard so it will be easier to grab and not really within reach of his younger sisters to mess with.
Toys
We purchased two large clear plastic containers. One of the containers we put all of his stuffed toys, action figures, cars and electronic games. We moved it inside of the closet on the floor which is easy to scoot in and out. We reutilized his container shelf unit and placed it inside the closet to the right. This will be for all of his shoes and future craft storage. Oversized toy vehicles such as construction vehicles, remote control cars are all parallel parked inside on the closet floor.
Play towers or action figure play stations which he plays with are placed in front of the foot board out of the walk-through space or along the wall space near the closet door.
Containers
In another open container we put all of the building blocks and Legos at the top of the closet shelf. This is to control clutter by putting it out of reach. Also on the top shelf are the noise makers, books and message jars. Our second plastic container includes all of our family games, board games, playing cards, puzzles, dominos, etc. We put his piggybank on top of his room shelf above his bed. Other little decorative themed storage items have places to add his favorite trinkets or greeting cards. Framed generational blanket, baseball bobbleheads and other room decór that is not meant to be played with.
Shelving
Utilize the space on the wall for shelves to put decór, books, collectibles, three dimensional letters, framed photos, family albums and/or signage. Display model automobiles, ships or planes. Add natural decór with a plant or succulents on a floating shelf. Our curious children tend to break off leaves or dig in the dirt so we don’t put plants that are within reach to avoid soil messes.
Open Layout
We are fans of rooms where we can walk through it fairly easy. Going around furniture like it is an obstacle course can get old quick. Especially if you are moving sleepy children or have to check on one of your children in the middle of the night. To avoid this we moved the furniture to hug the walls to open the walk space so that we can utilize the changing table or go straight to the closet. The laundry hamper is next to the dresser and closet. There is plenty of play space in the middle of the room with enough overhead light.

In addition to the bedroom lamp we have a Rainbow RainMate that recirculates the air and it adds a refreshing scent to the room. We no longer use humidifiers, because the RainMate has effectively improved our indoor air quality and removes odors. Add Essential Oil scents anytime you want to.
